Step Afrika! is a professional dance performance company that is the first in the world that uses the dance tradition of ‘stepping’. Stepping is an art form used by African American fraternities and sororities and in African traditions. Founded by C. Brian Williams in 1994, Step Afrika! is committed to bringing high-energy performances and outstanding youth programming to our community. The company has earned some of Washington, DC's highest honors, including the Mayor's Arts Award for Outstanding Contribution to Arts Education and a special award to Step Afrika! Founder C. Brian Williams for Innovation in the Arts.
In 2009, Mayor Adrian Fenty designated Step Afrika! as Washington, DC's first "Cultural Ambassador" and the company enjoys world-wide recognition, performing throughout the United States, Asia, Europe, South America and Africa.
The Washingtonian also proclaimed Step Afrika! as a showstopper - "one of twenty exciting performers and groups well worth a trip to the theater!" The company's artists are all college graduates with degrees ranging from fine arts and theatre arts to biology and architecture. All the dancers have a dance background in various disciplines - ballet, tap, modern, jazz, and stepping. This makes for a very vibrant, energetic, unique performance!
